Review Miele G4998 Dishwasher
At $1,299, the G4998 is one of the more expensive dishwasher’s you can buy. It has a good wash system, good racks, dries well, but it has a few problems you should know about before you buy. And this video you learn all about the G4998 including features and reliability, based on real service calls, plus brief comparisons their main rivals, Bosch and KitchenAid, as well as other Miele dishwashers. So know a lot about this dishwasher as well as every other option in this price range. So let’s get started.
At one time, Miele was the most reliable dishwasher sold. A few years ago, they had a few minor issues like buzzing solenoids and frozen motors. However, that has improved considerably. Miele once again the most reliable dishwasher, now only needing service, 8.16 percent of the time in the first year, better than KitchenAid at 11 percent and better than Bosch at over 12 percent.
The G4998 performs the basics of dishwashing well. It has three levels wash action with three full spray arms. In contrast to most other brands with two or two with the sprinkler head like Bosch. It has good ranking with three racks.
The second level is adjustable. The only technically better system is the KitchenAid M series with four levels of wash action, with one washing level coming from the upper rack itself. In terms of third racks, the G4998 has the better three 3D rack, so it folds under allowing for more room on the rack below.
Miele’s third rack is better than most as well because the tines in the rack secure the silverware so it can’t rub together and scratch like every other brand during the cycle. The only have the better rack, maybe the larger rack of the KitchenAid M series. Miele dries well and for years was the best on the market.
It has an intake at the bottom, so the outside air is directed to the side wall. The hot steamier air has attracted the cooler side and dissipated as water. But Bosch now has crystal dry that uses volcanic elements to increase heat absorbed moisture to dry even plastics.
Their auto air door pops open at the end of the cycle to release excess heat and moisture for the best drying available. KitchenAid also now has a similar intake system to a Miele, but adds a fan to pull the air in as well, and a heating element to help evaporate the water. Miele has never been a cycle washing machine. The G4998 has the main cycle like pots and pans, normal and Sani like many other brands.
If Miele does have an issue, it’s not a quiet dishwasher with a 46 decibel level rating. The minimum threshold for quiet in a dishwasher is 44, so you’ll hear the dishwasher faintly. So the G4998 is a nice combination of washing drying with decent racks.
How does it compare to a similarly priced Bosch? Bosch has a completely different feature set. It has two spray arms with a sprinkler head, versus three for Miele. They both have third racks, but Miele is better because it holds the silverware and it’s the 3D so it folds down for more room underneath. Miele’s drying system has an intake allowing air to the dishwasher is good, but the Bosch crystal dry is better, along with the door opening at the end, the cycle to accelerate drying.
Miele is technically better in washing and racking, Bosch is better at drying and is quieter at 42 versus 46 decibels for a Miele as we said before, Miele is the more reliable machine. The KitchenAid M has a competitive dishwasher with four levels of washing and similar drying to the Miele.
KitchenAid will be quieter at 44 decibels. But perhaps the best comparison is to Miele’s own dishwasher. The G4998 has the better cutlery tray and the express wash for $200 – $300 more than the basic model the G4228US. The next better model starts their new G 7000 series, which is quieter at 43 decibels, has a similar auto opening door to the Bosch to accelerate drying, and an array of different cycles like quick intense wash for 60 minute wash and dry for $200 dollars more.
Should You Buy It?
It’s a good dishwasher and performs the basics of washing and drying extremely well, along with solid racking. However, at $1,299 – $1,399 you should consider this model but depending on what features are important to you, there are other brands in other Mieles to consider as well.
